MISSION GREENBELT

The Mission Greenbelt Project is working with San Francisco residents to build a continuous public artwork of sidewalk gardens to connect the Mission District's street trees, sidewalk gardens, backyard gardens and vacant lots from Dolores Park at 19th & Dolores to Franklin Square Park at 16th & Bryant. map

The gardens will create habitat and forage for bees, butterflies and birds. Soil absorbs rainwater, which recharges underground aquifers and releives the city's overburdened water treatment system. Plants photosynthesize carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen and grow deep taproots, which bring water to the surface and improve degrated soil.

The Mission Greenbelt Project forms an intersection between San Francisco-based movements:

1. creating habitat for urban wildlife (Nature in the City)

2. producing and distributing fresh-grown food (Free Farm Stand)

3. improving public places (PlantSF), Mission Roots, (Guerrero Street Greening), (Livable City) & many others.

This project works in partnership with the SF Department of Public Works Bureau of Urban Forestry and receives donated services and supplies from Sunset Scavenger Co.
